Snow boots and ski boots and clothes…Ski Dubai!

December 26, 2007

What an awesome day!  After sleeping until noon (we’re finally on Arabic time), we took a taxi to the Mall of the Emirates to Ski Dubai.  This is the most organized system for skiing I’ve ever seen; you buy the amount of time you want (we spent 610 Dhs for two hours~about $160 for all of us), go get your rental ski clothes, put on your ski boots, throw your stuff in a locker, pick up your skis, and head to the 4-person lifts.  It’s just under freezing inside the ski area and the snow is perfect powder with different areas for bunny slopes to expert.  After a couple of falls, Kyle found his ski legs and skied with Kimberli for the first hour; Sean skied with Mianna until she needed a warm-up break.  She was much happier after hot chocolate and a KitKat, so we headed back out to make the most of our last 30 minutes.

We skied straight down and rode the lifts back up non-stop and Sean made two final runs on his own right up to the last minute.  Those of you who have skied or traveled with Sean know that he has never met a stranger, so we managed to make new acquaintances from Holland, England, South Africa, Mexico, Germany, and Texas J.  (The kid from TX said his father is here as an evangelical minister—and by the way, there are two (count ‘em) churches in this city of 3.5 million people: one catholic, one interdenominational).  As soon as we removed our ski boots and clothes, they were whisked away by the very attentive workers.  A bit different than our usual après-ski, we enjoyed hot tea, sodas, and chicken satays before returning to our hotel so Mianna could get some much-needed sleep, Sean could catch up on the news, and Kyle could do his homework.
